what would i need to sharpen the ends of the brass rods?

Get yourself some cheap wooden chopsticks and use one to poke through, no need to be sharp as hole is already there and other than friction there is no risk

What? We've all spent £££ on brass awls and you can do this with a chopstick? :D

As Scoops said you're only trying to widen a hole hole. Most chopsticks I've used are pretty solid, I can't see you breaking one, they're not like cocktail sticks.
