It's sad to see how the old Wells Firework Factory at Dartford has deteriorated so much now.
Also a shame that the project to shift one of the sheds to Amberley Working Museum failed.

  2. I’ve driven down the little lane alongside it and peered through the fence on a number of occasions..Shame you can’t get in as apparently there is a small store room packed full of fireworks that were due to be sent out to the suppliers when the place was shut down......

Wishfull thinking....... nothing there, the site has been gone over many times from the moment it ceased trading......

    Who owns the land now?

  5. It may have something to do with Dartford Hospital trust as the now demolished Joyce Green Hospital was in situ...So much building going on all around it ,with housing estates ,hotels and distribution depots all having been completed with more to follow..I understand the Wells site is “contaminated “ land so not sure how long before new works can commence there..

I was involved in taking down one of the sheds and walked the entire site whilst there. I can say with some certainty that there is no stash of fireworks there. The sheds are in a state of disrepair and all I spotted was a couple of large bags of bentonite clay. The ground under the sheds is pretty explosive though (although this might have been caused by powder dislodged from the deconstruction of the shed). Someone was using an angle grinder to take the tips off nails securing the corrugated steel sheeting and it ignited the powder. There was a huge amount of smoke and flame. A bit unnerving as it was right below me when I was working up a ladder! lol
The following photos were taken in October 2006 and from the above video, the site has deteriorated considerably since then.

Great photos thanks for this @Firefiend

Ideal site to develop into houses for UKFR members  Authentic ex-factory outbuildings with a possibility of random explosions every time you have a bonfire.

On a serious note what is the long term prognosis for the site? Who owns it now?

I wonder if anyone has any similar photos of the sheds at Standard when they were still around? Would love to see those.

That delightful sparkler at the end was when sparklers were sparklers ... and not the puny, little fizzle toothpicks we have today.

Thanks for posting this video, nice to see and hear real history. Are there any other video interviews of workers/ owners of the other lost British pyro companies?

  19. Hello, not posted for ages. Sometime in the late eighties, early nineties Standard produced a promotional video, which, I think, included footage from the factory. It was mentioned in an issue of Fireworks magazine. It would be interesting to hear if anyone has seen a copy - this would have been on VHS back in the day...
